Hooks: the first three seconds decide everything

On a paid feed you have a heartbeat to earn the next one. A practical guide to hooks that stop the scroll and still sell.

Most of an ad's fate is sealed before the third second. If the hook does not earn attention, nothing after it matters - the budget is already gone. So we spend a disproportionate amount of our craft on the opening beat.

The hook is a promise, not a trick

A good hook tells the viewer, fast, that the next few seconds are worth their time - and then keeps that promise. Clickbait that does not pay off buys you a cheap view and an expensive, low-intent user. The hook and the payoff have to be the same story.

Patterns that earn the next second

  • The relatable problem - open on the exact frustration your product removes.
  • The visible result - show the after, then earn the before.
  • The pattern interrupt - a motion, a sound or a frame that does not belong in the feed.

Test hooks, not whole ads

Because the opening carries most of the weight, the highest-leverage test is swapping the first three seconds while holding the rest of the ad constant. One winning hook can be reused across a dozen edits - which is exactly how a creative library compounds.

The takeaway

Obsess over the opening. It is the cheapest, fastest lever you have - and on a paid feed, it is the difference between a scroll and a customer.
